Before the procedure, you will discuss the benefits and possible complications of the injection with the consultant, who will then follow up with a consent form.
About the procedure
The consultant will take a small blood sample, from a vein in your arm, they may use ultrasound guidance if needed. The radiography consultant will work alongside the MSK specialist to identify the vein in a quick and efficient way to limit your discomfort.
Your blood is then processed in a centrifuge. This process spins the blood at high speed, allowing the separation of red blood cells, white blood cells and plasma. The consultant will then extract the rich part of the plasma and inject it into the injured area or directly into the affected joint. This is all visualised using an ultrasound scanner.
After the procedure, you will be provided with a care advice leaflet and you will also have the opportunity to ask any questions. You will then be advised to wait for 15-20 minutes, so that we can ensure that you’re safe to be discharged home. We do recommend that you are accompanied by a family member or friend whilst having this procedure.

The skin is then cleaned and prepared, and a local anaesthetic is injected to ensure the removal is entirely pain-free. The lesion is carefully removed and sent for routine pathology analysis. For procedures requiring stitches, a follow-up appointment is arranged two weeks later for removal and a results check.
